Kapok is also called vegetable down, vegetable silk, or Java cotton; the blossom-fibre is delicate, soft and shining. The fibre has not only a pleasant touch, but it has also an amazing variety of excellent attributes. Kapok doesn't felt and clot and keeps many years laxing and elastic. Kapok is light, is a good insulation, is warming, is air permeable, is water repellent and last but not least is moth and mite proof.
The kapok filling of a cushion or mattress weighs 50 % less than a cotton filling and 30 % less than a wool filling. Kapok fibre has a natural wax coating and a smooth surface. Most natural fibres are air permeable as is Kapok, however they store too much moisture, for example, cotton made coverlets and mattresses must be dried and aired frequently. The harmful humid climate that breeds bacterium is excluded in the case of a Kapok filling. Kapok is a dream for all allergic and sensitive people.
Worldwide Kapok was very popular as a filling until the 1950s. After that it was replaced by foam and synthetics for easier maufacturing. Kapok has been rediscovered for use on yachts; it breathes, allows good air circulation, is adaptable, returns always to its original volume and has a buoyancy of its own. It is ideally suited for use in life belts, boat cushions and mattresses. And, everyone who has been sitting or lying on Kapok filled cushions is full of appreciation of this natural product. |
